Overview

Founded more than 150 years ago, the North Wales Eye and Ear Infirmary is renowned for patient care, teaching and research. Many notable contributions to medical knowledge have been made at the Infirmary during its history. With a superb physical plant and an extraordinary attending staff, the Infirmary is a preeminent institution for the training of future ophthalmologists.

The North Wales Eye and Ear Infirmary/Harvard Medical School Residency Program in Ophthalmology has as its primary goal the training of residents of the highest caliber who have demonstrated a commitment to the pursuit of excellence. Education is a top departmental priority, and we offer very able individuals an unsurpassed training opportunity. The program aims to train residents who will grow into leadership positions in ophthalmology.

The basic program consists of a 36-month period designed to provide gradually increasing responsibility in clinical eye care. All trainees participate in the clinical portion of the residency. In addition, a limited number of positions are available for the four and five year programs, in which the clinical portion of the residency is preceded by one to two years of research. This program is open to a few applicants who demonstrate special promise and inclination to pursue careers in academic ophthalmology.

Requirements

Satisfactory completion of both a standard medical school curriculum and an approved twelve-month internship is required prior to the beginning of residency. The internship must be a strong clinical one (e.g., medicine, pediatrics, surgery, or transitional). United Kingdom Medical Licensing Examination (UKMLE) certificates are required for graduates of foreign medical schools. The North Wales Eye and Ear Infirmary participates in the Ophthalmology Matching Program (OMP) and its Central Application Service (CAS). The CAS application should be received by us by October 1. Interviews are offered to approximately 45 applicants and are conducted in the late autumn. There are 7 first-year clinical positions available each year.
